Love Is Worth The Wait

Love Is Worth The Wait

One of my favorite scriptures about dating and relationships is “enthusiasm without knowledge is no good;  haste makes mistakes” (Proverbs 19:2).  This verse is not exclusive to love and relationships but I like to apply it to those areas because the heart can often cause us to move faster than God’s instruction.  I meditated on this scripture just before bed last night and when I awoke, I was reminded of its message when I heard the lyrics to one of my favorite songs, “Let’s Wait Awhile” by Janet Jackson.  While this song is not a Christian song, its message is very applicable to Proverbs 19:2, so I wanted to share it today.

As singles, one of our greatest challenges is keeping guard over our hearts and exercising wisdom (Proverbs 4:23). If you’re single or dating, and you have a desire to be married one day my encouragement is to simply take it slow.  It’s okay to take love slow.

While statistics, life experiences, age and friends may cause you to feel as though you need to hurry up and find love, God’s promise has never changed.  He says “delight yourself in me and I will give you the desires of your heart” (Psalm 37:4).  When we wait on God to deliver the desires of our heart, he promises to fulfill them to completion and increase us throughout the process (Philippians 1:6; Isaiah 40:31).  You don’t need to brainstorm ways to make love happen sooner because God’s promises are unchanging.

The love that you desire is worth the wait.  The love that you have to offer is worth the wait.  The love that God has hand-picked for you is worth the wait.

Lyrics: “Let’s Wait Awhile”

There’s something I want to tell you

There’s something I think that you should know

It’s not that I shouldn’t really love you

Let’s take it slow

When we get to know each other

And we’re both feeling much stronger

Then let’s try to talk it over

Let’s wait awhile longer

Let’s wait awhile before it’s too late

Let’s wait awhile before we go too far

Remember that special night

When all of the stars were shining bright

We made our first endeavor

To stay together

We made our very first promise

To love, to share and be real honest

But on that very first night

It wasn’t quite right

Let’s wait awhile before it’s too late

Let’s wait awhile, our love will be great

Let’s wait awhile before we go too far

I didn’t really know not to let all my feelings show

To save some for later so our love can be greater

You said you would always love me

Remember, I said the same thing too

You don’t have to be frightened with my love

Because, I’ll never give up on you

Let’s wait awhile, awhile before it’s too late

You know you can’t rush love, love

Let’s wait awhile before it’s too late

Let’s wait awhile, our love will be great

Let’s wait awhile before we go too far

Let’s wait awhile before it’s too late

Let’s wait awhile, our love will be great

Let’s wait awhile before we go too far

I promise, I’ll be worth the wait

Reflection: Think of all the things you want to offer your future wife or husband.  Write down all of the things you desire to experience with him or her.  Read Psalm 37:4, and know that God will never break a promise.

Scriptures: But I am trusting you, O Lord,   saying, “You are my God!” My future is in your hands (Psalm 31:14-15).

But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint (Isaiah 40:31).

Prayer: God, I choose to walk with you today while I wait for love.  Help me learn how to love you unconditionally during my time of singleness so that I can learn how to love my spouse just as you have loved me.

Love,

~ETE

Song of Solomon 8:4 says Daughters of Jerusalem, I charge you by the gazelles and by the does of the field: Do not awaken love until it so desires. These words are repeated throughout Song of Solomon. Bible scholars believe this encourages us to not make love unnatural or forced. By taking things slow we can learn more about the person we care for, we can learn how to serve them and help guide them toward Gods purpose for their life. So no matter how the relationship pans out we have supported a brother or sister in Christ. I believe that this verse echoes the beauty of your message as well. Thank you for reminding us how beautiful the journey of love is and how precious it can be to wait and take things slow.

Yes and one version of this verse says “promise not to awaken love until the time is right.” I definitely agree that it’s encouragement let love grow naturally without forcing it. Love is like a tree. It grows day by day, moment by moment. When we let it grow naturally and tend it to properly it becomes a mighty oak tree that helps us learn to protect our love and our lover (spouse). Such a great way to keep us encouraged Courtney!

I thank God for your blog Erika, your life, wisdom and Love for God. He always speaks to you and you bring great messages of inspiration and encouragement whenever needed.Today I woke up with a broken heart and spirit. Feeling I have failed and wasted years of my life fighting a battle that was never meant or intended from God. Your post along with Courtney’s reply brought tears to me eyes. Thank you both for the insightful messages you both shared today. I need and should allow myself to be broken, cry and feel powerless so I can fully rely on God to restore me as he desires.

Rozzy, your post reminds me of a demonstration someone once did at a women’s conference on the topic of God’s love. They showed a glass cup in tact and one that had been broken. When the light hit the pieces of the broken glass, it shined through every single line and crack. Our hearts and lives are just like that broken glass. When we are broken, God’s love shines through the greatest because he is close to the broken-hearted. Like you’ve mentioned this is a wonderful time to feel broken because God’s light, love and strength can be perfected in your weakness and brokenness. The same goes for your tears. When they fall, they water the seeds of your faith and cause your harvest to be nourished and developed. I believe God is using this time to stir up a new thing inside of you and in your life. The more you lean on him, the more of him you’ll. Like the word says “blessed are the pure in heart for they will see God.” You are pure in heart and God promises that you will see his goodness while in the land of the living (Psalm 27:13). There’s no such thing as wasted time in a life with God because God’s glory can be found in every part of your story & testimony. I’m ministering to myself and encouraging myself as I write this because I too have often felt like time was wasted in relationships that were not God’s best for me. Moments like that are another illustration of God’s grace. God knew about those moments before they even happened, and he graced your life and your heart with healing, strength, restoration and victory. But most of all, his grace has given you another chance, and a few more after that chance is used up too. Nothing about your life is wasted because of who God is and because of His plans for you. Romans 8:28 confirms this to be true. I love you Rozzy and I’m lifting you up in the name of Jesus. He loves you so much and so do all those who know you. <3 Thank you for being our beautiful bright shining light of God's love <3

OOh my I thank God for you! I was asking myself today, how you are able to have such positive outlook on life each day and overcome trilas? When i read your reply especially where you stated “I’m ministering to myself and encouraging myself as I write this because I too have often felt like time was wasted in relationships that were not God’s best for me” I realized how human you are and indeed, you allow the grace of God to keep you intact. You are a precious gift to many especially women. May God continue to lift you up in spirit as you lift us up!!! 2 Corinthians 12 :9 “But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. 10 That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong”. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you for your uplifting words!

Like the Word says “two are better than one” which is why I’m so thankful for a medium to exchange and encourage one another. We often feel like we are alone in the midst of challenging situations but we’re not. There’s always a brother or sister there who can build us up and encourage them. I’m so thankful for the opportunity to be uplifted by your words of wisdom, love and encouragement. At the end of the day, even though we’re leaning on one another, it’s really God’s strength that we’re receiving from each other. Thank God for his power. It is truly amazing =) Thanks for being you sis <3
