Note to Self: “Be your secret self!”
One of my goals for 2014 is to be my “secret self”. Today’s post is inspired by a book I’ve been reading called “START” by Jon Acuff. It’s such a great book to motivate you to START working on that dream that you’ve always wanted to accomplish. It’s inspiration to get up and begin to do what no one else is doing. Inside each of us, literally lies another person. There’s a person who has big dreams, one who is not shy and quiet, one is who is an excellent Public Speaker, Athlete, Businessman, Coach, Author, Pastor, Lawyer, Writer, Doctor, Dentist, Hair Stylist, Singer, Artist, Trainer…do I need to keep going?
Inside of every single one of us is the person we see when we close our eyes before bed each night. It’s the person we see in our mind that’s living life to the fullest when our favorite song comes on. That person is having a blast internally but when are you going to release him/her and allow that person to live on the outside? How long is that person going to stay hidden? How long are you going to keep that person a secret from the world? How long are you going to continue to withhold your gift?
God made us the promise of giving us the desires of our heart not just to bless us, but bless others too (Psalm 37:4). Sometimes we are afraid to be our secret self because we think “oh, but what if they don’t like me?” But NEWSFLASH: you’re the person you are now and people don’t like you! (who cares about those people). You’re not here to walk in their calling. You’re here to walk in your calling.
To become more comfortable being your secret self you may have to create an alter ego like Beyonce (“Sasha Fierce”). Whatever you need to do, just do it! You see how well Sasha Fierce is doing don’t you? When you walk in your calling and live out your dreams, you also inspire others to do the same. You allow God’s kingdom to become greater because you’re doing things for His glory and not your own.
My secret self dreams of traveling the world and encouraging others. I’m often shy and I tend to shy away from being the center of attention, but I have come to learn that is NOT my battle. God built me the way that I am and and He planted certain dreams in my heart. He knew they were possible with Him so all I need to do is simply walk in the direction where He’s leading.
Are you allowing a personality trait or physical attribute to keep your secret self hidden? I think our secret selves have been hidden long enough, don’t you? Wake him/her up and START being the person that God has called you to be. START doing the things that God has called you to do.
To Jon Acuff, I can’t thank you enough for walking in your calling and writing this book!
Happy Thursday friends!
